The EQS 53 has a quoted 358-mile range from its battery

The first high-performance electric saloon developed by Mercedes-AMG has gone on sale, with prices starting at £154,995.

First UK deliveries of the EQS 53 4MATIC+ are due to take place in April next year, with customers having the choice of two derivatives: ‘Night Edition’ and ‘Touring’.

To differentiate the two models, an optional AMG Performance Pack is available on ‘Night Edition’ and a Rear Luxury Lounge pack on ‘Touring’ examples.

The German saloon features a dual-motor set-up for four-wheel-drive and a 648bhp power output for a claimed range of 358-miles from a single charge of its 107.8kWh battery.

Mercedes-AMG says the EQS 53 4MATIC+ can sprint from 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 137mph. The £8,995 AMG Performance Package shaves four-tenths of a second off the 0-62mph time and raises the car’s top speed to 155mph.

Standard specification for both models includes a ‘Hyperscreen Package’ that has an augmented reality head-up display in addition to a Burmester surround sound system, Active Parking Assist and a 360-degree camera.

Visually, a black AMG grille, AMG side skirts, a sculpted rear apron with diffuser-style inserts and a discreet boot-lid lip spoiler gives the saloon added road presence.

‘Night Edition’ boasts AMG body styling and 21-inch AMG alloy wheels, while the interior features a flat-bottomed leather steering wheel, sport pedals and full leather upholstery.

A fully digitised dash and driver console are highlights of the EQS 53’s hi-tech interior

The AMG Performance pack adds an AMG ceramic composite braking system and an AMG ‘Dynamic Plus’ set-up that increases maximum power and torque for short bursts.

Inside, the cabin’s ambience is lifted by carbon fibre trim and the driver can choose from ‘Balanced’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Powerful’ synthesised sound modes.

Those who opt for ‘The Touring’ are promised “comfortable, classy performance and styling” that consists of 22-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels and mood lighting for the interior.

The £2,995 ‘Rear Luxury Lounge’ bundle secures black Nappa leather comfort seats, electrically adjustable rear seats with neck and shoulder heating, wireless charging for mobile devices and additional USB charging points.

All EQS models come with a three-year Mercedes ‘me Charge’ subscription which provides access to a wide network of public charging providers.

The on-the-road-price also includes a six-month ‘BP pulse+’ subscription which provides either free or reduced charging in addition to a one-year IONITY unlimited membership that guarantees free charging at IONITY rapid-charging stations.
